Here's how the players performed:

SCOTLAND

ALLAN McGREGOR: Helpless to prevent both goals from Gareth Bale, having produced some important saves earlier in the match. 7/10

ALAN HUTTON: A hard-working shift from the full-back who tried to make runs forward and help the front players as well. 7

CHRISTOPHE BERRA: Performed well enough in the heart of defence but could not prevent the home side from claiming the goals that mattered. 6

GARY CALDWELL: Produced some timely blocks in the first half to keep Scotland ahead but the threat from Wales proved too much in the second half. 6

DANNY FOX: Probably handed the hardest task of all the Scotland players in trying to snuff out the threat of the impressive Bale, who caused plenty of problems with his pace and delivery. 6

DARREN FLETCHER: The skipper made his long-awaited return after a lengthy illness and initially appeared nervous before growing into the game and showing composure in the midfield. 7

SCOTT BROWN: Returned after missing the last double-header through injury and put in enough effort in the middle of the park but an ongoing hip problem no doubt contributed to his withdrawal at half-time. 6

JAMES MORRISON: Handed the Scots the lead with a well-taken opener and could have found the net again after linking up well with Steven Fletcher. 7

KRIS COMMONS: Back in the national team as a late call-up and produced a decent shift with some surging runs but, like Maloney, could have helped going forward more. 6

SHAUN MALONEY: Conceded the penalty that allowed Wales to haul themselves back into the game and could have had a bigger impact from the wide areas. 6

STEVEN FLETCHER: Back in the side after resolving a dispute with boss Craig Levein, the on-form striker set up the opening goal and displayed impressive link-up play at times. 8

SUBSTITUTES

CHARLIE ADAM (Brown, 45): Thrown into the action at half-time and did well with deliveries into the box. 5

JAMIE MACKIE (Commons, 85): Not enough time to make an impact. 3

KENNY MILLER (Morrison, 85): Like Mackie, no time to make his mark on the game. 3

WALES

Lewis Price: Given the nod with both Wayne Hennessey and Boaz Myhill injured, the Crystal Palace goalkeeper could do little to stop James Morrison's strike and pulled off a good stop to deny the same player after the break. 7

Chris Gunter: Often linked up nicely down the right with Bale. 6

Ben Davies: Did well for the most part on his debut, although might have done more for Morrison's goal. 6

Darcy Blake: Another caught ball-watching as Morrison dashed through to score. Sustained an injury in the second half but played on. 6

Ashley Williams: Allowing Steven Fletcher to beat him to the ball and flick it on for Morrison to score will go down as a black mark on his first game with the captain's armband back in his possession. 6

David Vaughan: Delivered some crunching tackles in the middle of the park. 6

Joe Allen: Involved in plenty of good build-up play in midfield, although could not convert the chances that came his way. 7

Joe Ledley: Did not see enough of the ball to make a telling contribution and was substituted in the second half for Hal Robson-Kanu. 5

Steve Morison: Lone striker should have done better with a missed header that was swiftly followed by Scotland's goal. Also substituted after the break, with Craig Davies coming on. 5

Aaron Ramsey: Some had predicted Ramsey would flourish having been relieved of captaincy duties and like Allen, he put in some good work without managing to finish when the opportunity came his way. Also picked up a booking, meaning he misses the next game. 6

Gareth Bale: A livewire throughout, constantly troubling the Scottish defence with his darting runs, crosses and attempts on goal. Won and scored the penalty and then smashed in the winner. 9

Substitutes

Craig Davies: Involved in a tussle with Christophe Berra but did not earn a penalty. 5

Hal Robson-Kanu: Helped drive the team's comeback. 6
