RYAN FOX finished with four birdies and an eagle in his final six holes to smash the course record with a nine-under-par round of 62 to lead by one shot from Robert Coles after the first round of Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge.
The New Zealander made his major championship debut at St Andrews last week, finishing in the top 50 of the Open after a fine 67 in the final round, and he continued that form in France.
The 28-year-old is only playing in his fourth European Challenge Tour event but recorded top-ten finishes in his first two tournaments, and he believes he is in strong enough form to win this week.
“I am obviously pretty happy after that,” he said. “I played great all day and got pretty hot on the back nine. I had a couple of nice ones to finish and it was just a good day all round. Last week at the Open was a great week. I played great in the last round and I’ve managed to keep that going here.
“I felt that every part of my game has been really close to firing well. For a while I’ve put some good scores on the board without shooting a really low one.
“Today I saw everything finally come together. The putter worked and my ball striking was good, so I’m really pleased with my game right now and looking forward to the weekend.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
