Great Britain & Ireland’s amateurs took another step towards Walker Cup victory as they eased into a four point advantage after the final session of foursomes at Royal Lytham this morning.

Nigel Edwards’s team, who led 7-5 overnight, won the foursomes 3-1 and moved into a 10-6 lead overall. The hosts require 3 ½ points from the afternoon’s 10 singles matches to regain the trophy they last won at Royal Aberdeen in 2011.

Having won Saturday’s foursomes by a 3-1 margin, Edwards kept the same pairings and the same order and it reaped another rich harvest.

Scotsman Jack McDonald, and his Irish partner Cormac Sharvin, impressed again but had to dig deep to stave off a spirited American fightback from the duo of Lee McCoy and Hunter Stewart.

The GB&I pair had been four-up through six but McCoy and Hunter reeled off five birdies in seven holes to get back to all-square through the 13th. McDonald and Sharvin stood firm though and having edged ahead again, they were conceded the match on the 18th when Stewart found a bush with his drive to hand GB&I a two hole win.

In the top tie, the English alliance of Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen overcame Beau Hossler and Deen McCarthy by a 3&2 margin while the Irish pair of Paul Dunne and Gary Hurley held on for a slender one hole win on the final green against Mike McCoy and Scott Harvey. The US did give themselves something to cling to in the final match as Bryson DeChambeau and Robby Shelton beat Gavin Moynihan and Jack Hume 3&2 but’s very much advantage GB&I.
