Scott Henry’s last ditch bid for promotion to the European Tour came up short in the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Oman.

The 28-year-old made a spirited burst for the line with a closing five-under 67 but his share of seventh place with a nine-under aggregate of 279 did not lift him into the tour card-winning places on the order of merit.

Henry, who went in to the season-ending showdown in 20th place on the money list, needed to haul himself up into the top-15 to secure a return to the main circuit but he eventually finished 18th, just £2254 short of the mark. The former Scottish Boys’ champion will now attempt to secure a European Tour spot at next weekend’s qualifying school final in Spain.

Henry’s fellow Scot Jamie McLeary held on grimly to the final qualifying place on the rankings after finishing third last in Oman while Glasgow’s Andrew McArthur earned a return to the European Tour after safeguarding his place in the top-15 on the final order of merit with a share of 30th.

At the head of the field, Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia claimed the honours with a 13-under 275 as he finished the season at the top of the Challenge Tour rankings with record-breaking earnings.
