As far as the Tartan Tour is concerned, it appears to be the perfect match.

"It's quite wet up here and a lot of people play golf; it's ideal," said Mike Johnson-Hill, the managing director of Galvin Green, that well-kent waterproof clothing company that continues to keep golfers dry.

In partnership with Gore-Tex, the hi-tech brand that defends in the deluges, you could say the alliance has left a delighted Scottish PGA secretary, Brian Mair, singing in the rain. With these two new sponsors of an improved Scottish Assistants' order of merit on board, Mair continues to drive the domestic scene forward.

"I think the assistants' side of things was an area that had been neglected a bit," said Mair at the unveiling of the deal at Gore's plant in Livingston. "It needed a boost. The assistant professionals are our future, after all."

In addition to the backing of the assistants' scene, which will be headlined by July's Scottish Young Professionals' Championship, the tie up with Galvin Green and Gore will see the Scottish PGA develop a unique apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with the Sports Academy of Scotland. The pilot project, which will first be tested in 2015 at upwards of 20 clubs throughout Scotland, will give school leavers an opportunity to earn a modern apprenticeship qualification under the guidance of a PGA club professional.
