Stephen Gallacher, Scotland's lone representative, will partner Europe's talisman Ian Poulter in tomorrow's opening round of fourball matches at Gleneagles.

The 39-year-old Scot will be the lone European rookie in action on the opening morning as Jamie Donaldson and Victor Dubuisson miss out.

However Poulter, the man credited with sparking "the Miracle of Medinah" two years ago, will be the only player in their match who has previously taken part in a Ryder Cup after American captain Tom Watson sprang a surprise by partnering Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in what will be the third match on course.

All three American newcomers will be involved from the off, with Jimmy Walker teaming up with Rickie Fowler in another youthful partnership in the second match against the Continental combination of Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Germany's Martin Kaymer.

Bubba Watson, the only American to win a Major this year when he claimed his second green jacket at the US Masters, will lead the way for the visitors in re-establishing the highly successful fourball partnership he formed with Webb Simpson two years ago, against the experienced pairing of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson.

However, the pick of the opening round of matches is the last one on course which pits world number one Rory McIlroy, who has won the last two Majors - the Open and the USPGA - against Phil Mickelson, the only man on either side who has won more Major championships.

McIlroy is partnered by vastly experienced Spaniard Sergio Garcia while Mickelson will play with Keegan Bradley with whom he formed an unbeatable partnership at Medinah as they won all three of their matches together.
