It has been an exciting week for Scottish sport with the Olympics only a week in, and Scots competitors already close to breaking the country’s all-time tally for the most medals.

For the first time at an event of this scale, athletes have been sharing the excitement and disappointment with each other and the public directly, via Twitter.

Below is a round-up of their messages from the first week of the Games.

Friday, August 3

Katherine Grainger and partner Anna Watkins win gold in the women’s double skulls. Team GB Men’s swimmers top their 4 x 100m Medley Relay heat.

Thursday, August 2

Chris Hoy wins his fifth Olympic gold, and there is success for Scots canoeists Tim Baillie (gold) and David Florence (silver) competing in the canoe slalom C2 class. There is disappointment for disqualified women's cyclists Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish, disqualified for a rule breach - and plenty of twitter chat from other Scots athletes reflecting on the day’s events.

Wednesday, August 1

The gold drought ends with a win for rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, shortly followed by victory for Bradley Wiggins in the men’s time trial. Celtic fan Michael Jamieson has the Aquatics Centre and the whole of Scotland on its feet with a fantastic 200m breaststroke swim that earns him silver.

Amid concern that Britain has not yet won a gold medal, the TeamGB eventers claim silver at Greenwich park. World champion canoeist David Florence does not qualify for the C1 canoe slalom final.

Monday, July 30

Tennis player Elena Baltacha is defeated in the second round of the women’s singles by Ana Ivanovic and confirms that she will take time out of the sport for an ankle operation. Swimmer Robbie Renwick is sixth in the 200m men’s freestyle and Caitlin McClatchey and Hannah Miley both qualify for the finals in their events - 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley. Team GB gymnasts win bronze.

Lizzie Armitstead gains a silver in the women’s cycling road race and Rebecca Adlington wins bronze in the 400m freestyle. Scots swimmer Robbie Renwick qualifies for the 200m freestyle final and beach volleyballers Shauna Mullin and Zara Dampney celebrate their first win.

Saturday, July 28

Athletes reflect on Friday’s opening ceremony and there is disappointment for Team GB in the men’s cycling road race. Scottish swimmers David Carry (400m freestyle) and Hannah Miley (400m Individual Medley) compete in Olympic finals.
