KRIS Commons was back in the old routine for Celtic on Monday night at Kilmarnock.

He took control of the match, hit the woodwork twice and was rightly named man of the match. I would have thought that after a performance like that Ronny Deila would be thinking 'I have to start playing this guy'. Teams are going to sit in against Celtic and I know from personal experience with Ross County two weeks ago that when we saw Commons coming on with 10 minutes to go we thought 'we need to be careful here, he is the one that could open you up'.

But if the question is whether, ultimately, he is a Ronny Deila type of player, then I would still have to say no he isn't. The Norwegian seems to want players who always work really hard, press the game, play with a constant energy, and I wouldn't say Commons is that type of player. As a manager you have to force guys like him into your team, you need to find him a place, but Deila doesn't look like he is willing to do that. You can't have too many Commons types or the balance of your team won't be right, but I wish I had the option of him in our team.

I am not saying he definitely won't re-sign for Celtic. But my guess, based on how little he has been playing and with his contract now having just five months to run, is he will be away in the summer. While the club are being linked with potential immediate replacements like Shaun Maloney and Gary Mackay-Steven, I think Celtic would be well advised to keep him until the summer, rather than taking a small fee for him during the January transfer window. I can see Kris letting his contract run down, and the club wanting him to stay so they can make sure they win the title.

The flipside is that if Celtic are looking for silly money, potential buyers will just say 'well, we will take him in the summer anyway'. I think it is in the best interests of Celtic to start playing him until the end of the season and get the best out of him to ensure they win the Championship, rather than taking £300,000 or whatever right now.

I know he has had a nagging injury this season, but it is always a huge decision for any club to leave their top scorer out. What every Celtic punter will say is that you have a guy there who scored 31 goals for you last season in the league not playing, so no wonder the gap with Aberdeen is closing. It is a simple fact that when he doesn't play Celtic don't score as many goals. Those goals could represent so many more points.

When a club leaves their top scorer out you need to have somebody coming in, filling the void and scoring nearly as many goals, but that is not happening at Celtic.

If he doesn't get a two-year deal up here he will get one somewhere else, so it is Celtic's gamble. Conversely, I feel Kris suits a club like Celtic. They always have plenty of possession and don't have to work too hard to get the ball back. When he was at Derby they were a middle-of-the-table team (they are better than that now) who had to work for everything they got and it didn't really suit Derby or Kris.

Assuming Neil Lennon can turn Bolton into a top team again, Kris will be fine if he goes to the Reebok Stadium. However, I would worry about him in a team which really had to scrap for something every week. But if he does leave in this window, Ronny Deila will know he has to replace Kris Commons' goals and assists or he is going to get flak.

I AM going to buck the trend on this one. No-one has been more critical than me about the standard of refereeing in Scotland, especially when I used to go through all the incidents each week on the BBC. While I admit Willie Collum has had a couple of bad games recently - the St Mirren v Kilmarnock match where he sent two off and awarded three penalties, then Motherwell v Aberdeen, where he got it wrong when dismissing Steven McManus for handball - I think there is far too much clamour to get him hung, drawn and quartered.

Willie will be the first to admit that he might deserve a lower league game for a week or too, but he has refereed us a couple of times recently and been fine, in fact I thought he was excellent in our 2-2 draw at Motherwell in December. I still think he is one of our better referees so let's not go overboard.
