Alex Arthur, the former World Boxing Organisation super-featherweight champion from Edinburgh, has announced his intention to retire from the sport by the time he reaches the age of 35.

This gives him just 15 months to fulfil his ambition to add a light-welterweight title to his collection of ring honours that also includes British, Commonwealth and European championship belts.

Arthur made a winning return to the ring at Meadowbank Sports Centre at the weekend, defeating London-based Mauritian Michael Frontin, 80-73, on a seven-fight bill he promoted.

"I have had 110 amateur bouts and 34 pro fights and I have dedicated my life to boxing. Now it's time I showed the same dedication to my family," he said. "I have been fighting since I was 10-years-old and I've promised my wife, Debbie and my sons that I will not box beyond my 35th birthday.

"I am ready to start fighting for titles again, and if I can win one at light-welterweight before I hang up my gloves, I will retire a happy man."

The bill also featured Kenny Anderson, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and Hollywood-based middleweight Craig McEwan, who has compiled a record of 19 wins and two defeats fighting in America, Canada and Mexico.

Super-middleweight Anderson defeated Sheffield's Wayne Reed, while Edinburgh-born McEwan defeated Paul Morby of Portsmouth 80-72.
