The Scots took control from the second end when Muirhead hit to score 3. They then stole a single in the fifth to lead 5-3 when Hungary's skip Ildiko Szekeres could only remove one of two Scottish counters.
Hungary levelled in the sixth, but Scotland scored 2 in the seventh and stole a single when Hungary missed a chance for 2, and they eventually ran out of stones in the 10th.
Muirhead's rink face a crucial final round-robin game against Russia this morning. "It's a big game," she said. "That's going to determine a lot."
Tom Brewster's men went down 7-6 to table-topping Sweden, and must beat winless Hungary in their final tie today to make sure of Scotland's place in the world championship line-up this season.
Scotland's men have had wretched luck on and off the ice all week and the trend continued in the tie against Sweden. The medal games at the weekend are out of reach, but they looked as if they would win when skip Brewster played a soft takeout in the sixth end to score 3 for a 5-2 lead.
In the ninth end, though, the Swedish skip Niklas Edin tapped out a Scottish counter to score 2 and then moved on to win 7-6. "That was one that got away," said Brewster while Edin acknowledged. "We probably should have lost that game."
