SALLY Conway, the Edinburgh judoka, suffered disappointment at the European Championships in Baku when she finished seventh in the Under-70kg event.

The world No. 6 was hoping to medal after winning the Grand Slam event in the Azerbaijan city last month and beating world No.1 Kim Polling.

She started well, beating Aleksandra Samardzic from Bosnia-Herzegovina and then Esther Stam (Georgia), but then lost to Szaundra Diedrich (Germany) in her final pool match.

It put her into the repechage where she still had a chance of a bronze medal but lost to Hungary's Szabina Gercsak.

Conway has had to re-focus her season after the championships were originally scheduled to take place in Glasgow in April but were then moved to Baku as part of the inaugural European Games.

"I've never fought the Hungarian girl before, I was hoping to beat her, I believed I could, but today wasn't my day," the Commonwealth bronze medallist said.

"We knew about the cancellation of Glasgow a long time ago, so our preparation changed a little bit. We went to Mongolia for a training camp and then had tournaments we might not necessarily have done if the Europeans were in April.

"I did feel prepared and ready to go, but this is judo and these things happen. I will just take what I can from this and move on.

"There are still loads more competitions and more chances to get points to qualify for Rio. I'm in a good position at the moment and I just want to carry that on and do my best in whatever tournament I get given and hopefully qualify."

Edinburgh clubmate Sarah Adlington, the Commonwealth champion, fights in the Over-78kg event today.
