SCOTLAND will be involved in four of the eleven British Isles finals that will be decided at Stanley in Co Durham today but were left contemplating what could have been when they lost out in a further four semi-finals yesterday.
The Midlothian club in Dalkeith though are flying high, with Stacey Laidlaw in particular eyeing up a double success. She lines up in the junior singles against England's Chloe Wordingham and then turned in a brilliant display when she skipped clubmates Kelly McDougall, Alison Plenderleith and Gaynor Duncan to a hard fought 21-20 win over England in Fours.
Standing between them and the title is Sandra Bailie's Irish rink. Another double could also be on the card for the Duncan's with Gaynor's husband Ronnie lining up in the gents pairs with Colin Walker.
Yesterday they dominated in the closing stages of their semi against Ireland, scoring sixteen shots over the last six ends to post a 27-12 win. Today they meet Jordan Davies and Phil Carpenter from Wales.
Inverclyde's John Fleming Jnr is through to the men's Junior Singles final. He turned in a strong performance against former champion Gary Kelly from Ireland and won 21-18, scoring a treble and single on the last two ends to book his final berth against England's Ryan Atkins today. Disappointment came when England stung the Scots in three semi-finals yesterday. Singles title favourite Billy Mellors lost 21-16 Jamie Walker, Jack Condy's Whiteinch senior fours went down in an extra end 19-18, and then Emma Brown's East Lothian trio only scored on two of the last eight ends and lost 25-18.
Mike Stepney's Elgin rink were pipped by Andy Kyle's Irish rink 20-18. World Junior Under 25 Bowls Championships, Broadbeach Bowls Club, Queensland, Australia The Scots contingent at the World Under 25 Championships at Broadbeach, on the Queensland Coast of Australia, the venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games bowls, are sitting pretty after day two of the singles and mixed pairs round robin stages.
Yesterday Kevin Anderson beat holder Dylan Fisher from Melbourne and is in second place in the singles, just fifteen shots adrift of section leader Kante Hasebe from Japan. Ryan Burnett is locked on four points with Australia's Ben Twist and Kiwi Ewan Wong with Canada's Jake Schuknecht four points clear of the pack but who has yet to sit out his bye matches.
Bronze medallist last time around, it's a five way tie at the top of the women's singles with Lesley Doig in fourth place, just fifteen shots behind section leader Lisa Goddard from New Zealand. Doig and Anderson are second in the Mixed pairs again just seven shots behind leaders Australia, while Burnett and Kimberley Anderson have yet to win a game in their group.
