The international skiing federation (FIS) has encouraged all winter sports governing bodies to oppose any plan to stage the 2022 football World Cup in the winter.

The FIS has grown concerned at how that tournament would impact on traditional winter competitions were dates to be switched from the summer.

Following a council meeting late on Sunday, FIS announced that it planned to agree on a resolution with the other six winter sports federations in a combined attack on FIFA's plans to switch the dates of the tournament in Qatar. Football's governing body is mulling the idea to move the tournament given concerns over the intense heat that teams would be asked to play in.

"FIS will submit a proposal to the other six International Winter Sports Federations to sign a resolution against organising the World Cup during the winter sports season in 2022," read a brief FIS statement.

FIS has long viewed FIFA's plans with suspicion, aware that a World Cup, the world's biggest and most popular single sports event, would risk taking away viewers and sponsors from the skiing season. Gianfranco Kasper, president of FIS, has been among the most vocal critics of FIFA and has repeatedly warned of the possible impact on skiing and other winter events.

The International Olympic Committee is also monitoring the situation since a World Cup in January 2022 - one proposal under discussion - could affect the Winter Olympics that year.
