Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow put on an unbroken century stand to lead England’s recovery in the third Ashes Test after a couple of quick wickets had threatened to tip the balance in Australia’s favour.

Malan moved onto a Test-best 82 not out while Bairstow (36no), moved up a place to six in the order, was proving a capable understudy as they led the tourists to 238 for four on the opening day of the crucial match at the WACA.

England had earlier fallen from 115 for two to 131 for four in a mini-wobble during the afternoon session, with captain Joe Root strangled down the leg side by Pat Cummins.

Mark Stoneman was dropped twice, both times on 52, but he added just four more runs to his total before a controversial not-out decision for caught behind off Mitchell Starc was overturned by third umpire Aleem Dar on the basis of marginal Snicko evidence.
