JED-FOREST are top of BT National League Division One after seven rounds of fixtures and their charge is being led by three brothers who just cannot stop scoring tries.

At the weekend the Borderers went to Falkirk and won 20-13 to leave them unbeaten in the second tier.

And for the Young brothers – captain Gregor, his twin Lewis and Callum – things could not be going much better at the moment.

Having grown up playing in the local area, Gregor and Lewis both earned the chance to play for the Scotland Sevens squad a number of years ago.

They have since returned to Riverside Park and, now aged 25, are determined to try and help Jed back into the top flight.

And this term they have been joined in an exciting looking backline by Callum, 18, and the trio have bagged six league tries each to date.

Gregor, who has been playing outside centre, said: “The season has been going really well so far and for myself and Lewis it has been great to have Callum coming into the senior ranks and joining us.

“Last season we finished in fourth place in the table and some of the results and performances certainly made us believe that going into this campaign we could compete at the top of the table this time around.

“We have a good blend of youth and experience in the team and the young boys, including Callum, have come up and really worked hard to get used to first XV rugby.

“There is good competition for places in the squad and that keeps everyone on their toes with some big matches coming up.”

Gregor admits it can be a bit strange being captain and bossing your two brothers around on the pitch, but they certainly get their own back.

He explained: “Whenever I get the ball at outside centre all I can hear outside me is my two brothers screaming at me to pass them the ball because they are playing on the wing and at full-back.

“Sometimes I pass and other times I hold onto the ball, but if they do go on and score it means that I can wind them up by claiming an assist each time!”

Lewis is enjoying his rugby too and the full-back has praised the rest of the team for helping Jed get off to such a good start.

“We know that we have a lot of quick backs and a quite a bit of skill with the likes of Robbie Yourston, Monty Mitchell, Sean Goodfellow and Robbie Shirra-Gibb,” he stated.

“However, we cannot do much if the forwards don’t win us ball and those guys up front have been really good in the early weeks of the season.

“They have been putting in a power of work to get us good field position and as a backline we have blended pretty well.

“Given that myself and Gregor are a bit older than Callum and then we went away to the Scotland Sevens set-up for a while we were not sure if we would ever get the chance to play for Jed with him.

“He has done really well though and it is exciting for our family that we are all running out on a Saturday together.

“Myself and Gregor will need to make sure that he doesn’t end up scoring more tries than us though as we would never hear the end of it!

“Seriously though I think the three of us drive each other on and to have a bit of sibling rivalry can only help the team as we all want to be top try scorer.”

Callum is currently studying at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, but travels south to Jedburgh for training and matches.

The teenage winger said: “I never expected to get into the first XV so quickly, but the experience has been really good for me.

“The division we play in is much more physical that I have been used to in junior rugby with Jed Thistle and as a winger you are closed down much faster and need to really work to find space.

“I remember when Gregor and Lewis were breaking into the first team in their late teens I was a ball boy at the home matches, so now to be playing alongside them is a bit surreal.

“However, for me it is great to have them there with me because they talk me through games and give me good support.”
