Stuart Hogg: Defensively pulled out of position for Italy’s second try. No real spark or inspiration – until it really mattered 7
Tommy Seymour: Good early line break put Scotland on the front foot. However, was deprived of any space to work in or much of the ball 6
Huw Jones: Fell for Tommaso Allan’s inside run for Italy’s opening score. Much expected of him, but quiet throughout and eventually subbed 6
Nick Grigg: Nearly man in the first half, almost made a couple of half-breaks. More importantly, made a telling tackle right on half time and more throughout the match 7
Sean Maitland: A few injections of pace during the afternoon but with no real direction until he crossed for his touchdown that brought hope to Scotland 6
Finn Russell: Mixed bag from the Warriors stand-off – pretty much summing up his entire Six Nations. Injury brought an end to his day 6
Greig Laidlaw: Box kicked well to keep turning a determined Italian side. Distribution slow due to Italian interference. But what a kick at the end 7
Gordon Reid: Never looked comfortable in a torrid first-half battle against the physicality of the Italian scrum. No shock when he was hooked5
Fraser Brown: Recalled after injury, he found himself under pressure at the first scrum. Right place, right time for Scotland’s opening touchdown 5
WP Nel: Really found it difficult to live with the aggression, passion and belief coming from the Italian pack 5
Tim Swinson: Another who was so preoccupied staving off the Italian pack that he offered little in attack. Tackled well but had to 5
Jonny Gray: Long day spent tackling rather than getting on the front foot. Found himself swamped in a white sea but showed up late in the day 6
John Barclay: Importantly at a time when Scotland were struggling in the contest, was on the end of a great forward drive for Scotland’s second try 6
Hamish Watson: Tried hard, but this was just a bad day at the office for the Scots. His least effective display in the Six Nations campaign 6
Ryan Wilson: Missed a crucial tackle early in the second half which any international player should have made. Not the way he
wanted to end this term 5
Replacements: Stuart McInally introduced at the expense of Brown. Jamie Bhatti part of the half-time front row overhaul. Zander Fagerson always likely to be reintroduced for WP Nel. Richie Gray offered a run out in swap with Swinson. David Denton given last 10 minutes for Wilson. Ali Price got his chance following Russell’s injury. Pete Horne paired with Glasgow partner Grigg when Jones was subbed.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
