Max Evans is battling to prove his fitness for Scotland's meeting with France at Murrayfield on Sunday after being unable to take part in yesterday's training session with the national squad because of the ankle problem that forced his early departure against Wales in Cardiff last week.

With Al Strokosch having been ruled out of the rest of the championship with a broken hand also suffered in Cardiff, the only other member of the starting line-up for that match who was unable to train yesterday was Jim Hamilton, who has a throat infection.

Two other forwards are also receiving treatment, however, Richie Vernon having damaged an ankle during Sale Sharks' meeting with Northampton Saints at the weekend while Scott Lawson suffered a dead leg during Gloucester's meeting with Bath.

Ed Kalman, the Glasgow Warriors prop who made his international debut in Cardiff, was fit to train having recovered from the neck pain he was feeling after that match.
