Heriot's hit top spot as Gala lost while Edinburgh Accies grabbed their first win of the season on a cracking day of action in the BT Premiership yesterday.

At Goldenacre, Heriot's flew out of the blocks against top-four rivals Ayr and were 22-0 up at the interval.

During that spell Heriot's scored tries through Glenn Bryce, Charlie Simpson and Jack McLean with Graham Wilson kicking seven points.

In the second half, Wilson kicked three more points while all Ayr had to show for their afternoon's work in a 25-7 defeat was a converted try by Ross Curle.

Leaders at the start of the day, Gala lost out 22-10 to their Borders rivals Melrose at The Greenyards.

Melrose led 15-5 at the break thanks to tries from Graeme Dodds and Neil Irvine-Hess and five points from Joe Helps' boot. Man-of-the- match Peter Eccles added another try after the break with Gala's points coming from Euan Dods and Shaun Law tries.

Melrose head coach John Dalziel said: "We knew we had to put in a big performance today because Gala have been going really well. We started the game well and I thought the performance was even better than last week when we defeated Heriot's because our defence was tighter."

Edinburgh Accies were 13-5 down to Hawick at half time, but got their first win of the season with a great second-half comeback.

Late tries from Sam Pecqueur, his second of the day, Matt Coupar and Ruairidh Young as well as points from the boot of Alex Glashan saw Accies come through 28-13.

Captain Ross Weston scored a late try as Currie edged out Stirling County 23-22 at Malleny Park. Their other tries came from Malcolm Peacock and Joe Reynolds with County, who suffered a red card for an alleged headbutt, grabbing tries through Matt Lamb, Jamie Bhatti and Ali Price.

At Meggetland, Charlie Purdon scored a try and Greig Cannie kicked 11 points as Boroughmuir edged out Glasgow Hawks 16-15. Hawks' try scorers were Grant Stewart and George Horne with Horne kicking five points, but they fell just short.
