Heriot's held on to defeat Currie yesterday and stay top of the BT Premiership table after a cracking encounter.

Earlier in the day Heriot's had been named BT Club of the Month for December and in the opening stages at Goldenacre they looked like they might blow the visitors away.

They took the lead in the fourth minute through a converted try by Nathan Borel before a penalty from Joe Reynolds and a converted try by John Cox put Currie 10-7 up.

Keith Buchan's well-worked try then saw Heriot's regain the lead before Reynolds' second penalty for Currie.

Russell Nimmo grabbed Heriot's third try and then Reynolds kicked another penalty to leave things at 19-16 to the home side at the interval.

Just after the break Reynolds hit the post with a simple penalty. Currie would pay for that.

Moments later Rory Carmichael's try put Heriot's 26-16 up before their replacement Danny Levison, making his debut, was yellow-carded.

Currie scored a converted try through Malcolm Peacock, but in the next 32 minutes they could not break Heriot's down and the leaders won 26-23.

Heriot's captain Jack Turley was relieved at the end and said: "I thought we played well at times, but never got fully into our stride and fair play to Currie, they made us work hard for the win.

"We have plenty to work on in the coming weeks to make sure that we are in top form heading into the play-offs."

Melrose beat Hawick 32-8 at The Greenyards. After an early Richard Mill penalty, a converted try by James Head then saw Melrose go 10-0 up.

Mill's second penalty for the hosts made it 13-0 and with captain Rory Hutton in the sin-bin Hawick were struggling.

Hutton returned to action with a try, but at half-time they were still eight points behind. Neil Renwick's penalty brought them within five points before two tries from captain Fraser Thomson and one from Callum Anderson earned Melrose the victory and a bonus point.

Ayr lost for the second week running, Boroughmuir winning 21-17 at Millbrae to climb off the bottom of the table.

In a match delayed until 3.30pm, 'Muir shocked the hosts to go 8-0 up at the interval. They then kept up that form in the second half to secure a crucial win.

Gala are fourth still after beating Edinburgh Accies 21-8 at Netherdale.Ruairi Howarth, Gary Graham and Grant Shiells got tries for the home side with all the game's points scored in the first half.
