Current Kings of the Sevens, Melrose, face an anxious wait ahead of this weekend's Premiership final against Heriot's at Goldenacre after their Scotland under-20 flanker Neil Irvine-Hess was red carded in yesterday's Berwick Sevens.
The back row, playing for Melrose against Kelso in the pool stages of the Berwick tournament at Scremerston yesterday was sent off after apparently kicking the Kelso forward Dom Buckley on the head, resulting in the Poynder Park player requiring stitches.
The referee's report of the incident will be sent to Murrayfield and the likelihood is that Melrose will be without Irvine-Hess for the play-off final on Saturday. There could also be implications for Irvine-Hess playing in the World under-20 championship in Italy during the first three weeks of June.
The sending off of Irvine-Hess meant that Melrose had to play most of the tie with only six men unsurprisingly resulting in defeat to Kelso. The Poynder Park men then went on to beat Jed-Forest in the pool before losing to Gala in the second of the semi finals.
In the other semi final Edinburgh Accies edged out Hawick by 24-19 but in the final the Raeburn Place men could not match the overall pace of Gala, who ran in six tries, two apiece by Craig Robertson and David O'Hagan and one each from Ruairi Howarth and Gregor Hunter to retain their Berwick title with a 30-17 win. The result means that Gala extend their lead in the Kings of the Sevens competition after three of the ten rounds of the competition completed.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
