LARS Zetterlund yesterday quit Dundee United to rejoin his former Swedish club Orebro for a nominal fee.
The 35-year-old would have been out of contract in the summer, and his stay at Tannadice was cut short so he could be back with Orebro in time for the start of the Swedish season in two weeks.
Zetterlund, signed by Tommy McLean in October, 1996, made 100 appearances for the United first team.
Tannadice manager Paul Sturrock said: ''I had a chat with Lars a couple of months ago and informed him we would not be making him the offer of a new contract come the summer.
''He has been an excellent servant to the club and has also been a model professional, but at the end of the day decisions have to be made over what is best for the club, and we have to move on.''
Winger Andy McLaren left Tannadice just before Thursday's English transfer deadline in a #150,000 move to Reading.
qABERDEEN striker Mike Newell has turned down a loan move to Crewe Alexandra.
The English first division side offered Newell the chance to play first-team football until the end of the season. However, the 34-year-old will stay at Pittodrie until his contract expires in the summer.
Newell has been told he will not be offered a new deal by Paul Hegarty, and the recent signing of Jim Hamilton from Hearts has pushed him further down the order for a starting slot.
qIAN Anderson last night returned from his spell with Chelsea and vowed to help Dundee beat the drop.
Anderson, out of contract at the end of the season, spent three days on trial with the Stamford Bridge club earlier in the week.
The 21-year-old winger revelled in the experience of training alongside Italians Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo but insisted he will put any thoughts of a move on hold in a bid to secure Dundee's Premier League survival.
He said: ''I had a great time at Chelsea and it was brilliant to train alongside so many big names. The English transfer deadline passed on Thursday so it's too late to for any deal to be done. However, I'd certainly consider a move south.
''I'll be back training with Dundee on Monday and, hopefully, force my way back into the team.''
qDUMBARTON'S new management team will lead the side tomorrow in the only competitive game this weekend in Scotland.
Jimmy Brown steps up to become manager, and former Dundee and Dumbarton goalkeeper Tom Carson, who has been goalkeeping coach, will be his assistant.
Dumbarton have dropped the prices for tomorrow's match to #5 for adults and #1 for juveniles. There will also be a youngsters five-a-side tournament at the interval.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
