COLIN YOUNGSON of Aberdeen AAC retained his title in the Scottish

National Veterans cross country championships at Balgownie, Aberdeen,

yesterday. Youngson had little difficulty in covering the 10,000 metre

trail to win in 31-36, over 120 yards in front of Charlie McDougall

(Calderglen Harriers), who finished 22 seconds behind. Peter Marshall

(Haddington) took third place in 32-29.

PORTUGUESE runners dominated the European Club cross-country

championships on home soil at Acoteias yesterday, winning both the men's

and women's races. Domingos Castro led six of his countrymen into the

first eight places as Lisbon club Sporting controlled the men's race,

finishing with 12 points, ahead of DYC of Spain (38) and Racing of

France (70). In the women's section, Braga kept the title, beating

Birchfield Harriers, for whom Suzanne Samy, fifth, was the leading

runner.

HAYLEY HAINING signalled full recovery from being stood on by a horse

last summer when she was first Scot to finish in the nine-nations

under-23 cross-country international at Hannute, Belgium yesterday. With

Miss Haining sixteenth, Eileen Cochrane seventeenth, Sheena MacDonald

thirtieth and Val Clinton thirty-third the Scots finished sixth, one

place ahead of the English team.

EDINBURGH Southern Harrier Keith Lyall won the Chester-le-Street 6.6

mile road race yesterday in 33min.45secs, beating Europa Cup marathon

internationalist Ian Bloomfield by nine seconds. Lyall, who underwent a

tendon operation in November, is coached by John Lauder at Kelso.

THE LAST East of Scotland cross-country league race at Heriot Watt

University, Riccarton, on Saturday, was won by Iain Steel (Edinburgh

Southern). In the hardest race of the season over seven miles, he held

on to win in 41-31 from Aberdeen AAC's Ray Cresswell (41-35). In third

position was Peter Faulds (Falkirk Victoria) in 42-02, who led his club

to the senior title they last won in 1986.

Snooker

FORMER world amateur champion Darren Morgan from Cwmfelinfach crashed

out at the quarter-final stage of the #6000 Tennents Pro-Am tournament

last night at the Ambassadeur Club, Kirkcaldy. The 22-year-old Welshman,

now based in Stirling and a stablemate of Masters champion Stephen

Hendry, opened with an impressive break of 71, but failed to sustain his

early form and went down 2-3 to Scottish title-holder Drew Henry from

Langside.

Murdo McLeod (Livingston) also made an early exit, losing 2-3 to

former Scottish Champion Jimmy McNellan of Glasgow.

Lacrosse

VALERIE HOUSTON (West of Scotland), Kirsten Doig, Mairi Pollock (both

Edinburgh Ladies), Alison Gibb (St Andrews University), and Kirsty

Barber (Aberdeen University) are the Home Scots internationalists in

Scotland's lacrosse squad, announced following the national trial at

Riccarton, Currie, on Saturday, for matches against Wales at Peffermill

on March 11, England in London on March 18, and the world cup in Perth,

Australia, from September 2 to 9.

junior territorial tournament in York on Saturday. They drew 2-2 with

runners-up East, but were beaten 4-1 by champions Midlands, 5-2 by West,

7-2 by South, and 3-1 by North.

JIMMY DUNN, match secretary of Zetland ABC, announced yesterday that

his enterprising committee have agreed to promote the Gaelic Amateur

championships from May 17 to 20 at the Grangemouth Sports Centre.

The championships were contested last year in Nova Scotia, where Alex

Docherty (Blantyre) and Steve McLevy (Glasgow) both won gold medals.

Apart from Scotland, the nations who will be competing are Canada,

Wales, Ireland, and Brittany.

ISRAEL CONTRERAS of Venezuela knocked out Italy's Maurizio Lupino

after 37 seconds of the first round to win the newly created World

Boxing Organisation bantam-weight title in Caracas on Saturday.

WOLFGANG HOPPE of East Germany won the world two-man championship at

Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, yesterday in a combined time for four legs of

3min 38.05sec. Gustav Weder of Switzerland was second in 3-38.11 and

Janis Kipurs of the Soviet Union third in 3-39.89.

Britain's bobs finished in fourteenth and fifteenth places.

LEFT-ARM fast bowler Mike Whitney ripped through the West Indies

batting in Adelaide yesterday, taking six wickets to give Australia a

good chance of winning the fifth and final Test. At stumps on the third

day West Indies were 338 for eight wickets, 177 behind Australia's

first-innings 515. Scores:

THE first Test between Pakistan and New Zealand in Dunedin was

abandoned yesterday after the first three days were called off because

of rain.

Cricket officials said Pakistan had agreed to play a one-day match

today, a national holiday, instead of the final two days of the Test. If

conditions do not allow play, the 50-over game will be played tomorrow.

HAVING won the opening round of the Strathclyde Loch Sailing Club

Commodore's Cup series a fortnight ago, Roy McCubbin consolidated his

lead in the championship by winning the second round yesterday.

McCubbin, sailing a Topper, coped well with the blustery conditions to

come home an easy winner ahead of Crawford Reid. Result:

Rowing

WITH strong winds running against the current on the Forth causing

severe conditions, Saturday's Stirling Head of the River Race for fours

was run over a shortened course for safety reasons.

The crews suffered as they tried to cope with the conditions, none

more so than pre-race favourites Clydesdale/Stirling who amost sank and,

waterlogged, slipped back to sixteenth position overall. Their Scottish

international squad colleagues from Castle Semple also took on board

plenty of water and struggled to finish third, leaving the way clear for

St Andrew (Edinburgh) to take the title of fastest crew in a time of

17min 21sec.

Inverness, Scotland's newest rowing club, won the men's novice

division, while Clydesdale took the men's veteran and women's open

THE Scottish women's team beat their Flemish counterparts by 171.95

points to 168.3 at Ypres at the weekend, with Dunfermline's Faith Arnott

topping the individual rankings. The Dunfermline girl beat clubmate and

Scottish champion Susan Martin into second place by 0.13 points with a

score of 35.25, while current Scottish No.1 Ruth Gibson of East Kilbride

finished fourth.

Motorsport

THE Nissan GTP of Geoff Brabham, Arie Luyendyk, and Chip Robinson

continued to lead the Daytona 24 Hours in Florida yesterday after fog

halted racing for almost four hours. A heavy fog rolled in off the

Atlantic Ocean early yesterday, forcing officials to stop the Camel GT

sports car race after 10 hours 11 minutes.

The halt came with Brabham, the defending Camel GT champion, leading

by one lap over the Jaguar XJR9 of Price Cobb, John Nielsen of Denmark

and Andy Wallace of Britain.

After racing resumed the Nissan became locked in a battle for the top

spot with the Jaguar of John Andretti and the Porsche 962 prototype of

twice Daytona 24 Hours winners Derek Bell of Britain and Bob Wollek of

France.

After 18 hours, the three cars were on the same lap on the 3.56-mile

Daytona International Speedway road circuit, with the Nissan leading by

about 40 seconds.

Netball

SCOTLAND played host to England in the John Wright Sports Centre, East

Kilbride, on Saturday for the first of the home internationals. In the

under-18 match the visitors were much sharper than the Scots and led by

33-9 at the interval. The final result of 69-13 highlights the

differences in the standards of play.

Scotland, 40-13 down at half time in the under-21 match, rallied

bravely in the third quarter but were defeated 67-30 by a more efficient

English side.

SIXTEEN teams competed for the Scottish Netball Association

President's trophy at the John Wright Sports Centre, East Kilbride, on

Saturday. The eventual winners, Scotstoun, had to battle to the final

whistle before taking the trophy by beating Glenrothes by 5 to 4.

Tennis

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA came from behind to score a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 victory

over Lori McNeil in a nail-biting all-American final of the $300,000

women's international indoor championship in Tokyo yesterday.

The world's No.2 used her superior experience to claw back from 3-5

down in the final tie-break and then leapt for joy as McNeil ploughed a

forehand return into the net to lose her fourth successive point and the

match.

TOP seed and defending champion Patty Fendick of the United States

yesterday beat New Zealand's Belinda Cordwell 6-2, 6-0 in the final of

the Auckland women's tournament.

Fendick also won the doubles title, in partnership with Canada's Jill

Hetherington, beating Australians Elizabeth Smylie and Janine Thompson

6-4, 6-4.

Squash

CHRIS DITTMAR from Australia, the No.2 seed, defeated favourite and

former world champion Jansher Khan from Pakistan in straight games to

win the $7500 top prize in the final of the Standard Life Telesquash

international at Edinburgh Sports Club.

The 25-year-old world No.3's naturally attacking style was ideally

suited to Telesquash, in which rallies last a maximum of 15 strokes, and

he ran out a comfortable 16-11, 16-13, 16-14 winner.

In an entertaining third-place play-off, Scotland's Mark Maclean put

up a brave battle before going down 9-16, 16-14, 17-15, 17-19, 9-16 to

Australia's world No.5, Chris Robertson, in a 95-minute contest.

Maclean, who had beaten former world champion Ross Norman in the first

round, was rewarded with $2500 for his efforts.

MIKE HOWARD, the Manchester-based reigning champion and No.2 seed, was

dramatically beaten in the semi-finals of the Scottish Veterans over-45

championship at Bridge of Allan yesterday by unseeded Norman Telfer

(Western Squash Club, Glasgow).

However, Telfer faced in-form John Done in the final and, in spite of

making a superb start to the match, he never really recovered from

losing the second game by 10 points to eight. Results:

Table tennis

SWEDEN'S Jan-Ove Waldner won the prestigious European Top 12

tournament for a record fourth time yesterday after losing only one of

his 11 matches. Olga Nemes of West Germany collected her second victory

in the women's event as European champion and Top 12 title holder Fliura

Bulatova of the Soviet Union crashed from her pedestal to a humiliating

bottom place.

Waldner, who also won the event in 1984, 1986, and 1988, seized

victory in the first 10 rounds of the 11-match, round-robin tournament,

but then -- with his fourth title already in his pocket -- lost

concentration and conceded his sole defeat against Austrian veteran Ding

Yi 15-21, 21-19, 21-19, 21-16.

Ding, 30, was a leading Chinese player in the early 1980s before he

moved to Europe where he opted for Austrian citizenship.

Golf

TAIWAN, France, and Canada won their regional tournaments yesterday to

reach the finals of the Dunhill Cup at St Andrews from September 26 to

October 1.

CHI CHI RODRIGUEZ, the American veteran golfer, on Saturday received

the Bobby Jones Award, presented annually by the USGA to golf's man of

the year.

Swimming

EDINBURGH'S Dominic Sheils produced a string of stunning performances

at the Cunninghame Open swim meet at the Auchenharvie Pool, Stevenston,

at the weekend. Sheils, of the Warrender club who is the top-ranking

British junior in his age category, made a clean sweep of the four boys'

13/14 year events.

He took the butterfly in 1min 4.88 sec, a meeting record by more than

two seconds, and followed up with the butterfly in 1-4.88, more than

five seconds ahead of Cumbernauld's Stuart Wallace. He won the freestyle

in 58.90sec and the backstroke by almost two seconds in 1-07.75. For

good measure, he ended by capturing the 200 metres freestyle in 2-06.6.

Carol Shiell, swimming for the Edinburgh composite team, won the

women's 800 metres freestyle in 9-13.3. She followed that by taking the

200 metres freestyle in 2-07.34, smashing the meeting record by four

seconds.

Briony Shimmons lost out to Ireland's Sharlene Brown from Lisburn, who

won the 17/18 years 100 metres breastroke in

1-17.71, but the Stirling swimmer took the 100 metres butterfly in

1-10.59.

Basketball

THREE away victories in six days helped MIM Livingston to clinch the

Scottish men's first division basketball title, with their third win by

83-61 over the champions Cumnock at Cumnock Academy yesterday being a

rehearsal for next Saturday night's Scottish Cup final at Meadowbank.

Bobby Archibald scored 28 points for MIM.

Nearest challengers Rangers overwhelmed Dundee 100-50, but needed

their opponents to slip up in one of the games to overtake them.
