PEERS yesterday were told of the death of Labour former Minister Lord

John-Mackie, aged 84.

He served during the whole term of Harold Wilson's first Government

from 1964 to 1970 as Parliamentary Secretary at the Agriculture

Ministry.

Lord John-Mackie came from a farming background in Aberdeenshire. As

John Mackie, he was Labour MP for Enfield East from 1959 to 1974. He was

the brother of Liberal Democrat Lord Mackie of Benshie, who briefly sat

opposite him from 1964 to 1966 when he represented Caithness and

Sutherland.

He was chairman of the Forestry Commission from 1976-79.

He died at his home in Nazeing, Essex.

Labour's Lords Chief Whip Lord Graham of Edmonton, told peers: ''John

was a dear friend of this House and a good servant of the people.''

He added later: ''He was always on the side of the tenants and

agriculture workers.''

Lord Mackie of Benshie thanked peers for the tributes.
