A DOCTOR has claimed he was racially harassed by senior consultants at a top private hospital.

Dr Abdolreza Ahari, an Azerbaijani Iranian, alleges a consultant anaesthetist at the Health Care International (Scotland) Ltd hospital in Clydebank, called him the Sultan of Iran and the Sheikh of Iran.

Dr Ahari further claims his clinical competence was criticised by the consultants but that they still wanted him to work extra shifts on-call.

He said he was threatened with dismissal if he refused to work extra hours on-call, and ended up having to go on duty after only two hours' sleep.

He has taken the hospital company and Glasgow University to an employment tribunal, claiming race discrimination. Dr Ahari, 46, now a UK citizen, had been hired as a clinical research fellow through Glasgow University for an initial period of a year.

He said his time was to be divided between research, teaching and clinical duties, but instead he spent 100% of his time on clinical activities.

Glasgow University and HCI both deny racial discrimination.

The case continues.
