ROBERT McLachlan, who died last week aged 90, was for many years a significant and colourful figure in the Glasgow Meat Market.

Born in Pollokshields, his father was a master butcher and Robert joined him in that business. During the war, he became Meat Controller for South-West Scotland, and developed a great love for Dumfriesshire and Galloway which remained throughout the rest of his life.

When he returned to the meat market in Glasgow, he built up a flourishing business and was widely respected as an astute businessman but also as a man of integrity and honesty. He was still to be seen on the floor of the market in his eighties.

He was a committed and practising Christian and a member of St George's Tron Church in Buchanan Street.

He had wide interests and many friends. One of these, the late Ian MacNicol, was the catalyst in his enthusiastic interest in art, particularly in the works of Hornel and Munnings. He loved travelling, particularly in the West Highlands of Scotland.

In 1935 he married Janet Rankin who died 15 years ago. They had no children.
