Simon Chemwoiyo emerged from six frustrating years of injury and poor results to win the Prague Marathon yesterday ahead of two Kenyan compatriots.

Chemwoiyo set a personal best with his winning time of two hours 10 minutes 35 seconds. Josephat Kiprono was second in 2-10.38 and Samson Kandie finished third with a time of 2-11.48.

Russian Alina Ivanova set a course record of 2-27.42 in winning the women's event, lowering her personal best by more than four minutes. Leading results:

Cycling

There was silver and bronze success for the British track team at the first of the World Track Cup series in Moscow this weekend.

In yesterday's Olympic sprint, contested over a long course of one kilometre, European champions Chris Hoy, Craig MacLean, and Jason Queally were second-fastest qualifiers behind a new and impressive Spanish trio, while a French team including world sprint champion Laurent Gane finished back in seventh place.

The Spaniards clocked 59.973 seconds to Britain's 1min 00.436sec and went on to take the final by a similar margin, while Latvia beat Japan for bronze.

Golf

FORMER Scottish professional champion Colin Gillies won the #872 top prize in yesterday's Brechin Golf Club pro-am with a round of six-under-par 66.

Aitchison had steady rounds of 72 and 71 against a CSS of 71 and 70 for an aggregate of 143 and a five-stroke win from Greg McBain (Newmachar) whose clubmate Neil Melvin filled third place on 150.

Anglo-Scottish club-mates John Buchanan (Under-60 kilogram) and late replacement Jenni Brien (Under-56 kg), from Camberley, both lost bronze medal fights to finish fifth in the European Championships in Wrocklaw, Poland, yesterday.

Britain won gold through Corina Bryant at Under-78 kg and silvers for Chloe Cowen (Under-78 kg, Kate Howie (Under-70 kg), and Georgina Singleton in the Under-52 kg.

Motorsport

Scots veteran racer John Cleland was involved in a thrilling final-lap charge, which saw him rocket through the leaders to miss out on second place in the British GT Championship round at Silverstone by just 0.273 of a second.

The 47-year-old from Galashiels had to make do with his first podium finish of the year after his Chrysler Viper crossed the finishing line in line with Ian Astley's Lotus Esprit and five seconds behind winner Ian McKellar's works TVR Cerbera Speed 12.

Former Scottish and Mintex National champ Brian Lyall cruised to a two-minute victory in the Weldex Rally, the third round of the Tyresafe Scottish Rally Championship, after dominating the eight stages which meandered their way through the Cowal Peninsula. The 44-year-old Aberdonian, giving his Subaru Impreza a rare outing, finished two-minutes and two seconds ahead of the Ford Escort Cosworth driven by Trevor Moore. DANIEL Van Oesthuizen bagged a tally of 38 points as Edinburgh Eagles stepped up their Scottish Rugby League title bid by thrashing under-strength Glasgow Bulls 70-4 yesterday.

Bulls, with five leading players absent at the Scottish Students rugby league training camp, had no answer to the power and pace of the well-drilled capital men.
