Vexille (12A) *** Dir: Fumihiko Sori With: Meisa Kuroki, Shosuke Tanihara Japanese anime takes another jump forward in this sci-fi adventure from the creators of Appleseed. It's 2077 and the human race lives in fear of being taken over by androids. Japan, under the cosh of a giant corporation, has sealed itself off from the world to perfect a robot race. Enter doe-eyed, kick-ass heroine Vexille and her special forces team to penetrate the rogue state. While the story is the usual roughly sketched guff, the animation is stunning: pin-sharp, exquisitely detailed and slick. Director Fumihiko Sori, one of the SFX pioneers behind Titanic, does for anime what Ratatouille did for the common or garden toon. For all its amazing looks, after a while it's like watching a super-duper Saturday morning television show.
