An "extensive search operation" is being carried out in Midlothian to trace a missing elderly man.

Thomas Davidson, 73, was last seen on Esk Place, Dalkeith, at around 9pm on Tuesday and was walking in the direction of Lugton Brae.

Police Scotland, who are seeking the public's help to find him, said it is out of character for Mr Davidson to take off without telling anyone.

Officers said he may appear confused as they stressed they are keen to find him as soon a possible. Anyone who may have seen him is being asked to come forward straight away.

Mr Davidson is around 6ft tall but walks with a stoop, which makes him appear shorter. He has a slim build, short thin grey hair and was wearing dark grey flannel trousers and a large navy blue coat, which has two pockets on the chest.

Inspector Bryan Jones said: "An extensive search operation is now under way in an effort to find Thomas safe and well, including specialist dog teams and foot patrols.

"At present, we are concentrating our search effort in the Dalkeith area and I want to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience while we carry out this important work.

"However, we are keeping an open mind to the possibility that Thomas may have travelled to the wider Midlothian area or beyond and I would urge anyone who has seen or spoken to him to contact police.

"Likewise, if you regularly use local public transport and saw Thomas please let us know."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or speak to an officer.
