Ali McGregor's stated intention of combining her love for the great jazz singers with her predilection for trashy songs and Britpop from the 1980s and 1990s is a bit of a red herring.
Her trio's arrangements certainly put songs by Soft Cell, Fine Young Cannibals, Blur et al into a jazz context but McGregor's singing leans more towards the operatic and European art song schools than the Ella, Billie and Sarah trinity. Where she does score, though, is in her comic interpretations. Salt-n-Pepa's Push It, Prodigy's Firestarter and Britney Spears's Oops I Did It Again, complete with speeded-up vocal a la Dolly Parton, all provide genuinely funny moments and McGregor's self-deprecating introductions add to the entertainment value.
