After admitting that it "an awkward, stressful few months" following the addition of Jo Whiley as a co-presenter for the 5pm-8pm slot on Radio 2, Mayo opened his new show by dedicating a track to his former co-host, a move that was well-received by fans.

One called the gesture "a class act".

Whiley co-hosted Radio 2's drivetime slot with Mayo for the last seven months of his eight-year tenure which prompted a backlash from listeners.

Following his departure from the BBC, he said that he and Jo Whiley had "worked very hard to make the show as good as it could be."

Fans were quick to tune in and praise Mayo for his debut on the Bauer Media-owned station with one calling to admit that she had finished all loud jobs in the house to enjoy the show in peace. The presenting and the range of music on the show was also praised by those who tuned in.

Prior to the show, the broadcaster tweeted that he had trouble sleeping prior to the launch of the show writing: "This sleep thing doesn't really work when you've got a new radio station to launch."
