KLONDYKE Group has increased sales by 7.1% from £44.3 million to £47.5m despite constrained consumer spending.

The garden centre operator benefited from a full year of trading at the Byrkley Park site in Staffordshire which was acquired in October 2010.

Accounts filed at Companies House show pre-tax profits dipped from £4.8m to £4.6m in the 12 months to September 30, 2011.

Craft products, wild bird care, indoor furniture and winter goods lines were highlighted as strong sales performers. However, the severe cold meant a lot of plant stock was wasted.

Net debt increased from £34.1m to £37.4m, however Klondyke also completed a new five-year refinancing deal with Lloyds Banking Group and HSBC.

During the financial year a centre at Northallerton, North Yorkshire, was refurbished and extended then experienced a "significant uplift" in sales.

An extension in Inverness has just been finished and a larger project at High Legh, Cheshire, should be completed before Easter.

Wilmslow Garden Centre, which was gutted by fire, is expected to be rebuilt by the end of August this year.

The directors said: "We will continue to seek the necessary planning consents to further improve some of our existing garden centres with a view to enhanced growth in sales and profit performance."

Financial director Sharon Allan said: "In light of the current retail environment, the group's recent trading has been very positive."
