HIGH profile Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill, who once led a bid for Manchester United, is reported to be a candidate to be the next Bank of England governor.

Sir Mervyn King is due to step down from the position in June 2013 and it has been reported that Mr O'Neill was approached by the Treasury several months ago about applying for the role.

The report follows claims that Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney has also been contacted about the role, although his current employer has denied this.

Mr O'Neill, who chairs Goldman Sachs Asset Management, led the Red Knight's 2010 attempt to buy Manchester United football club.

Paul Tucker, the Bank of England deputy governor for financial stability, is seen as the front runner.
