JURYS Inn Glasgow is spending £3 million refurbishing its rooms and public areas in its first major upgrade since opening in the city almost a decade ago.

The 321-bed hotel, Scotland's largest by room numbers, expects to complete the overhaul in March next year.

Every room is getting new carpets, furniture, artwork and bathroom facilities, with the work being done in blocks.

Rooms on the 10th and 11th floors of the city centre site, open since 2003, are being converted into higher specification executive class spaces to appeal to corporate customers with benefits such as free wifi and late checkouts.

The hotel, which employs 75 people, has also upgraded its conference hosting floor, and bar and restaurant offering.

Barry Rowland, Jurys Inn Glasgow general manager, said: "Next year marks 10 years since we opened in Glasgow and I think it is very important we re-invest and bring the product to the next level.

"There have been a lot of new offerings to the market in that 10 years and we need to make sure we maintain our place in the market.

"It is important we always try to move forward."

Mr Rowland said the hotel typically operates at occupancy of around 85% across the year and he hopes to attract a greater number of business clients once the refurbishment is completed.

He added: "I think we will retain our occupancy. We would like to target new business that possibly would not have considered us in the past because of where our product has been positioned."

The main contractor for the project is English firm Equiss Services, based in Leicester, it has been revealed.
