A furniture supplier to local authorities has gone into administration with the loss of 57 jobs in Glasgow and West Lothian.

Blair Nimmo and Alistair McAlinden of KPMG were appointed joint administrators of First Furnishings Limited by the company’s director, Alexander Nisbet, on Thursday after the firm ceased trading.

Mr Nimmo said FFL had become a leading operator in its field, which involved supplying and installing furniture, flooring and white goods to local authorities, housing associations, letting agents and charities.

He noted: “The business was unable to continue trading in light of an increasing cost base, which, combined with contractual obligations, gave rise to acute cash flow difficulties.”

Nr Nimmo said as a result of the difficult financial position facing the company the administrators had no choice but to make all the firm’s employees redundant.

First Furnishings employed 27 at its base in Broxburn and 30 at a warehouse in Glasgow.

The administrators are exploring the possibility of selling its business and assets.

The bulk of FFL’s £5.8 million turnover in the year to March related to local authorities. Public spending has been under pressure amid the austerity drive. The fall in the pound since 2016 has pushed up import costs.
