Law firm appoints first female chairman
MARIE MACDONALD has become the first woman to be appointed chairman of law firm Miller Samuel Hill Brown (MSHB).
An accredited specialist in employment law, Ms Macdonald succeeds founding partner Michael Samuel, who remains with the firm as a consultant.
Ms Macdonald, recognised as a leader in her field, is the co-chair of the labour and employment group of the International Lawyers’ Network, which provides MSHB’s clients ready access to legal services in 67 countries on six continents.
She said: “I am honoured to be trusted by my partners to guide MSHB as we navigate through a much changed legal landscape and an
ever-changing business environment. Michael was instrumental in building the firm... and his contribution has been immeasurable.
“I am pleased we and our clients will continue to benefit from his expertise and wealth of knowledge in his new role.”
Two promoted to partner at DM Hall
DM HALL, the independent firm of chartered surveyors, has appointed two new partners, Steven Buist and Amanda Cameron, with immediate effect.
It has also promoted Jonathan Hunter, who will now run the firm’s Musselburgh office, to director.
Mr Buist, who joined DM Hall in 1999, currently runs the firm’s Kirkcaldy office. He specialises in the residential property market and has extensive experience of the Fife property scene.
Ms Cameron, a director and head of property services at DM Hall since 2011, is based in the firm’s Dunfermline office. She joined DM Hall in 2002, having gained extensive experience in the sales and corporate sectors.
Eric Curran, managing partner of DM Hall, said: “These promotions reinforce an already formidable professional team and we believe demonstrates our consistent determination to recognise, reward and celebrate individual talent and expertise.”
Women’s milestone at Balfour+Manson
Law firm Balfour+Manson has revealed it now has more female partners than male for the first time in its history, following a series of appointments.
The development comes 70 years after Balfour+Manson became the first Scottish law firm to have a female partner with the appointment of Ethel Houston.
The latest appointments take the firm’s full partnership complement to 24, including 13 women.
Elaine Motion, executive chairman of Balfour+Manson, said: “The gender profile of the legal profession in Scotland is shifting as a majority of those entering the profession are young women.
“I think Ethel Houston would be very proud of what we have achieved at Balfour+Manson.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
