A SCOTTISH Borders shellfish business is set to increase exports to Europe and Asia after securing a seven-figure bank boost.

DR Collin & Son, which is based in Eyemouth, received the backing from HSBC UK, with the funding being provided through a combination of facilities including invoice discounting.

The business purchases British shellfish and processes it for sale before export.

Its primary export market is France, where the company has recently set up a subsidiary business.

However, demand is also increasing in Spain and Italy, as well as in Asia, it said.

The firm said the financial support will enable it to increase production capabilities in response to steadily growing demand from its export markets.

James Cooke, managing director at DR Collin & Son, said: “The bank’s support has enabled us to increase our production ability to meet the strong demand for the shellfish we supply in Europe and Asia.

“Working with a global bank has also provided synchronicity and efficiencies with operating our business here in Scotland and in France.”

Nigel Kerr, of HSBC UK, said the company “has a long track record of delivering quality British shellfish to international markets”. The firm was set up in 1952, and employs 210 across the group. It sources fish locally and from around the UK, with smaller bases in the Highlands and Amble in Northumberland.
