Political parties are set to be quizzed on their plans to help freelance and self-employed workers at a unique pre-election hustings event this evening.

Herald columnist Catriona Stewart will chair a panel featuring representation from across the political spectrum on behalf of the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE) on manifesto plans to improve conditions for workers should their party hold the balance of power following the December vote.

The Big Freelance Debate, hosted at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu, will also feature an exclusive overview on the UK political landscape from respected pundit Sir John Curtice.

SNP minister for trade, investment and innovation Ivan McKee will face off against Labour’s Paul Sweeney, Conservative shadow cabinet member for jobs and fair work Dean Lockhart and Liberal Democrat candidate for Glasgow South Carole Ford at the event.

Each panellist will answer questions from moderator Catriona and audience members during the hustings.

Polls expert Sir John will give his views on the current state of British politics after the debate.

Simon McVicker, director of policy at IPSE, said: “The self-employed are a vital and growing part of the workforce, and this election they are also five million votes up for grabs. This gives Scottish parties the chance to say why they deserve those votes.”
