BP has announced plans to shed around 10,000 jobs as the oil and gas giant grapples with the challenges posed by the crude price plunge.

The cuts will reduce employee numbers at the group by around 15%.

The company said the majority of roles affected will be office-based, rather than front-line operational roles.

It did not give any indication of how the cuts will impact on its North Sea business, which is run from Aberdeen.

The company employs 70,000 people globally.
