HARRISON & Hetherington sold 64 clean cattle, 25 cast cows, 2,131 prime lambs and 624 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.
Twenty-eight prime bullocks sold to a top of 248p/kg to average 227p (-5p), while 36 prime heifers peaked at 257p to average 235p (-2p).
In the rough ring cast cows sold to £1,522 and 183p to average 141p (n/c).
Prime lambs gained in value this week to average £96 or 218/kg (+9p). Top prices were £126 and 278p/kg for Beltex lambs.
Cast sheep at the sale averaged £68 overall. Heavy ewes sold to a top of £119 for Texel crosses and averaged £92 (+£2), while light ewes peaked at £84 for Cheviots and averaged £54 (+£1).
The firm also sold seven prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday which peaked at 248/kg and levelled at 217p (+21p), while 14 prime, beef-bred bullocks sold to 233p and levelled at 219p (-7p).
Twenty-six beef-bred young bulls sold to 235p and averaged 203p (+12p), while 14 dairy-bred bulls peaked at 193p and levelled at 162p (+9p).
In the rough ring 177 cast dairy cows sold to 168p to average 102p (n/c), while 80 cast beef cows peaked at 210p to average 137p (+1p). Fourteen cast bulls sold to 155p and levelled at 123p (+10p).
There were also 1,987 prime lambs that sold to £135 and 325p/kg to average 217p (+4p).
In the cast sheep section 158 heavy ewes peaked at £120 for a Texel and averaged £68 (-£3), while 98 hill ewes were topped at £89 for a Greyfaced and averaged £69 (+£15).
Messrs Craig Wilson sold 2,317 prime lambs and 705 cast sheep at Ayr yesterday.
This was another large show of lambs this week, but quality types were thinner on the ground compared to previous weeks. The average weight of the lambs coming forward was also high at just short of 45kg.
Top prices on the day were claimed by the same vendor who sold a pair of Texels at £112 and a pen of 35 Beltex lambs which were knocked down at 245p/kg. Mules peaked at £100 on two occasions, while Blackfaces sold to £93. In the cast sheep section heavy ewes sold to £150 for a pen of Texel crosses, while Mules peaked at £84 and Blackfaces at £66.
Caledonian Marts sold 307 store and breeding cattle at its fortnightly sale at Stirling yesterday.
Bullocks sold to 250p/kg and £1140 for two different pens of Limousins to average 211p, while heifers peaked at £1,330 and 247p for the same pen of Shorthorn crosses to average 202p. The 66 breeding cattle at the sale included 41 sets of cows and calves from a dispersal which averaged £1,480.
