The Herald:

Scottish plant-based chocolate producer Fellow Creatures has secured a six-figure investment with backing from industry leaders including the founder of Veganuary.

Following the successful investment round, the Edinburgh-based ethical chocolate maker has landed UK-wide listings with retailer WH Smith and supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, fueling its ambitious growth trajectory.

Fellow Creatures’ Swiss chocolate, made using creamed coconut, "provides a premium alternative to dairy-based chocolate".

The £450,000 investment was secured through world-leading ProVeg’s International’s accelerator programme that helps plant-based brands raise funds.

Selected from over 250 startups, Fellow Creatures was just one of six companies to be supported in the initiative’s 2020 cohort.

Veganuary founder Matthew Glover is one of the main backers. He said: “We’ve seen the plant-based market boom in recent years, particularly with food and drink alternatives that are targeted at vegans and flexitarians alike.

“Fellow Creatures is one brand that has really hit a gap in the market for premium alternatives to our favourite foods, in this case, chocolate. I 100% believe in the business and look forward to supporting it through its ambitious growth plans.”

Originally from a dairy farming family, vegan founder Zsolt Stefkovics took a different approach to developing chocolate with a dairy alternative that didn’t compromise on flavour.

The entrepreneur said: “As a vegan, I found it difficult to find a chocolate that rivalled its dairy counterparts, so I set out to create my own.

“This investment will go a long way to help strengthen our position as a leading plant-based chocolate and drive incremental growth through increased retail and online distribution.”

Fellow Creatures chocolate range is now available at WH Smith travel outlets across the country and 70 Sainsbury’s stores as part of the supermarket’s Taste of the Future incubation initiative.
