Scotland's independent schools were yesterday celebrating some of their best ever exam results at Higher and Advanced Higher.

New figures show 90% of S5 pupils achieved A-C passes at Higher in 2008, the same as the previous two years, while 88% of S6 pupils achieved A-C at Advanced Higher, up 1% on 2007. This compares with a record national Higher pass rate for all Scottish schools - including the independent sector - of 73.4%, up from 71.7% the previous year.

The school with the best results in Scotland this year was Wellington School in Ayr which had an overall Higher pass rate of 99%.

Next came St Columba's in Kilmacolm at 95.2%. This was just 0.2% better than Dollar Academy, in Clackmannanshire, which achieved a Higher pass rate of 95%.

Nearly half of all Highers sat in the independent sector in 2008 resulted in an A grade, up 2% from 2007 while 38% of Advanced Highers resulted in an A grade.

Welcoming the results, Judith Sischy, director of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools, said: "The reward for their hard work will be in achieving their ambition to go to university, college or employment."
