JACK McConnell expressed anger yesterday after videos showing friends of his son in drink-fuelled escapades at the First Minister's official residence, Bute House in Edinburgh, were released on the internet.

Two clips, which were swiftly withdrawn from the YouTube website, showed a friend of the First Minister's son, Mark.

In one, the friend is shown in the Bute House kitchen helping himself to vodka and swigging it down, while in the other clip the same friend dances around a bedroom wearing a white bathrobe and then a floral kimono.

The images contrast starkly with the executive's agenda to tackle binge drinking and antisocial behaviour, and also raise fresh question marks over the increasing use Mr McConnell and his family have made of the National Trust for Scotland's townhouse in Charlotte Square. The trust provides it for a peppercorn rent, but has been seeking renegotiation of the lease.

The video clips shot on mobile phones were taken last yearwhen MarkMcConnell, 23, took some friends back to Bute House after celebrating his graduation.

Mr and Mrs McConnell were not staying at the residence that night and Markwas said to be in another part of the building when videos of the pranks were taken in the kitchen and a bedroom.

"Mark did not know about this and is, if anything, more upset than I am at the way his trust has been abused and he has been let down, " said Mr McConnell. "What is sad is that despite all our efforts over the years to keep our son and daughter out of the public eye, my son has been let down by friends. I know he is very disappointed."

Mr McConnell's son, now a probationary teacher, was said to be unaware of the clips before the media spotted them on YouTube. It was also said he has not invited the friends to Bute House since the night in question.

Opposition parties were saying little about the incident yesterday, content to sit back and watch the First Minister's embarrassment.
