LORD Jimmy Gordon is returning to Radio Clyde, the station he helped to found, as chairman, new owner Emap Radio Group announced yesterday.

Lord Gordon of Strathblane was chairman of Clyde's parent company Scottish Radio Holdings until last summer, when SRH was acquired by Emap in a GBP391m deal.

Political editor of STV from 1965 to 1973, Gordon was a founder member of the group which won the first Radio Clyde licence in 1973. He served as managing director until his appointment as SRH chairman in 1996.

Dee Ford, managing director of Emap's radio division said: "We are all delighted to have Jimmy Gordon back as part of our team. Apart from his experience and track record in Scotland, his standing both politically and in the national media in London will be of great value to us at a time when all broadcasting organisations are facing very substantial issues."

Gordon said: "I am grateful to Emap for this opportunity to maintain my association with Radio Clyde, with which I will always have a strong and almost parental link. I look forward to doing whatever I can to maintain the station's close links with the community it has served so well over the past 33 years." Gordon was awarded the CBE for his services to radio in 1984 and became a life peer in 1997.
