Pete Doherty was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail today for breaching his probation order, his record company said.

The sentence was handed down to the singer at a London court.

A planned Royal Albert Hall show has been postponed.

A statement from the 29-year-old singer's record company, Parlophone Records, said: "Today, Peter Doherty was sentenced to a total of 14 weeks in jail for being in breach of his probation order.

"Unfortunately Peter has had to postpone his show at the Royal Albert Hall on April 26.

"The show is due to be rescheduled and all tickets will be valid for the new date once it has been announced.

"Peter was very much looking forward to the show and would like to offer his sincerest apologies to all his fans and to all those concerned."

The sentence will mean Doherty will have to pull out of this year's Glastonbury festival at the end of June.

A spokesman would not comment on whether the singer, an ex of supermodel Kate Moss, would appeal.

In October last year, Doherty was given a suspended jail sentence by West London magistrates for a string of drug and motoring offences.

The four-month custodial sentence was suspended for two years.

Last year, he was also handed an 18-month supervision order and a 12-month drug rehabilitation order by district judge Davinder Lachhar at West London Magistrates' Court.

At the October hearing, the ex-Babyshambles singer pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis, as well as admitting various driving offences.

The Babyshambles frontman has appeared in court on a number of drug offences in the past and was praised by an east London judge last April for "more than cooperating" in his struggle to beat his addiction.

Just days before he was sentenced in October, Doherty left Thames Magistrates' Court in triumph after a judge removed the remaining term of a drug treatment order.

At that hearing, District Judge Jane McIvor told the singer she was going to revoke six months of the order after being convinced by experts.

She told him: "I wish you well."

This is not the first time the star has been behind bars.

In February 2006, Doherty spent several days in Pentonville prison after being charged with possessing drugs.

He was later released with a 12-month community order.

A year earlier, in February 2005, he spent four nights in the same prison after being charged with robbery and blackmail. The charges were later dropped.

And in September 2003, Doherty was given a six month jail sentence after admitting burgling the home of his former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat.

The singer broke into the London flat after being asked to leave the group because of his drug habit.
