Scots singer Lena Martell was recovering last night after undergoing open-heart surgery.

Ms Martell, 67, had the operation to repair a heart valve in Glasgow Royal Infirmary yesterday.

Her agent David Halford said: "She came through the operation with flying colours. The next few days will be difficult but everything is looking good."

Several dates on her UK tour have been cancelled because of the surgery, which was scheduled after Ms Martell complained of feeling breathless.

The Glasgow-born singer has enjoyed a loyal following. In her career she triumphed on Broadway and scored a number one hit in 1979 with One Day at a Time.

Ms Martell, born Helena Thomson, has endured decades of health problems. She was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1970s, then developed breast cancer and a serious condition which affected her metabolism.
