Peter Woodman The performance costumes worn by one of the greatest pop groups - The Supremes - are to go on show in the UK.

Visitors to the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) will be able to see more than 50 outfits worn by the Motown legends before the exhibition moves to other UK venues.

The V&A exhibition, from May 13 to October 19, will also feature the group's music, album covers and archive footage including interviews with group member Mary Wilson.

One of the first gowns purchased by the group when they were still called The Primettes will be on show, as will the beaded dresses the stars wore when they met the Queen Mother in 1968.

The exhibition will also look at the history of Detroit-based Motown Records.

With Wilson, the other Supremes, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, had 12 US number one hits between 1964 and 1969 with Ross going on to achieve superstardom as a solo artist.

The exhibition will move to the Grundy Gallery, Blackpool, from November 2008 to January 2009, then to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from March to June 2009 and to the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol from July-August 2009, with further venues to be confirmed.
