A Labour MSP today challenged First Minister Alex Salmond to a 100 metres sprint after a Holyrood spat.

Labour's Frank McAveety threw down the gauntlet after Mr Salmond made a jibe over a "pie and beans" episode four years ago which saw the then arts minister forced to apologise to Parliament.

"I am prepared as part of our commitment to sport and to tackling obesity to challenge the First Minister to a 100m sprint in which the winner will donate money to the Rainforest Fund charity," Mr McAveety said today.

"I'm prepared to wear a Team GB shirt and I am sure we can find a team shirt that Alex Salmond could fill.

"I'm sure if Alex Salmond really doesn't eat pie, chips and beans, which I very much doubt, then he won't be hot and bothered by this challenge."

Mr McAveety apologised for misleading Parliament after telling MSPs that an arts council book awards had delayed his arrival for ministerial questions.

He had in fact been eating pie and beans in the Holyrood canteen.

Green MSP Robin Harper told the First Minister in Parliament today that excluding aircraft emissions from the climate change bill was like leaving "pies, beans and chips" out of a diet.

Mr Salmond replied: "I am not an expert on pie and beans - I leave that to Mr McAveety."

The Labour MSP is proposing a £100 bet and urging all other MSPs to place a bet on who they think will win.

The money would go to the Rainforest Fund charity.

"I'm issuing that challenge to Mr Salmond today and I expect to hear back from him tomorrow afternoon when I'll be speaking in the obesity debate in the parliament," the Shettleston MSP added.

"I hope Scotland's First Minister is up for the challenge."
