After another day of signing speculation, Dundee United were the only Premierleague club to provide anything tangible for their fans, with Willo Flood arriving on loan from Cardiff City yesterday.
The 22-year-old midfielder - who made 25 appearances for the Championship club last season following a £200,000 switch from Manchester City and has also been capped at Under-21 level by the Republic of Ireland - has agreed a year-long deal at Tannadice.
"I'm confident he will do well for Dundee United," said Craig Levein, the Tannadice manager. "His style of play suits the SPL and will make him a firm favourite with our supporters. I was aware that a number of other clubs were interested in taking him and am pleased Cardiff City see this move as an opportunity for the player to improve his game."
David McCracken, the freed Dundee United defender, is set to join Paul Lambert at League Two side Wycombe Wanderers but another centre-back is set for a new deal with Stephen McManus tipped to be offered improved terms with Celtic.
Billy McNeill, the former club captain and manager, has suggested that the young Scot would be the best candidate to take over the captaincy from Neil Lennon.
"I think Stephen has all the attributes to be Celtic's skipper and he will mature further as he goes on," said McNeill. "And if Gordon does give him the captaincy he should be one of the first names on the team sheet - if not the first one.
"A captain needs to have good players around him but he needs to be on top of his guys. He needs to make sure they are playing even if he is not playing well himself and I think he can do that."
Meanwhile, Razvan Dinca Rat, the Romanian defender, has claimed Rangers are keen on him. The 26-year-old left-back, who has a contract with Shakhtar Donetsk until 2010, is also said to be interesting RC Lens and Olympiakos.
Gus MacPherson, manager of St Mirren, has admitted John Sutton seems likely to leave.
The 23-year-old Englishman has been offered a one-year deal but MacPherson said: "I would be pleasantly surprised if John returned to Love Street. The longer it goes on the more unlikely it is he'll come back."
Fellow striker Billy Mehmet has also not yet responded to the club's offer of an extension.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
