I know it's a little early to put it in the diary but what are you doing in October 2012?

Nothing planned? Great, well how about we all go and see the Hollywood costume exhibition at the V&A museum in London?

I know it’s a bit of a trek but consider this: the costumes from Gone With The Wind, Pirates Of The Caribbean and Gladiator are going to be on display. More importantly, Judy Garland’s Dorothy costume from The Wizard Of Oz is going to be there.

I’ve always had a bit of a fascination with Dorothy’s blue and white gingham dress, since I watched the classic film for the first time, on my gran’s couch, aged five. I was transfixed by her whole outfit, from the glittering red court shoes to the high-necked white blouse and that cute little wicker basket.

It wasn’t just Dorothy’s sartorial look I was into either – her hair and make-up sparked my interest too. The plaits, that auburn hair, those glowing red cheeks; she was the very picture of wholesome beauty.

I hadn’t really thought about it until now, but on reflection it seems obvious that my childhood curiosity with Dorothy’s healthy looks has inspired my own make up routine for years. I don’t wear my hair in plaits or bunches, but I rarely leave the house without a healthy dose of blusher on my cheeks. It does, I think, make me look more healthy.

Inspired by catwalk trends, I’ve tried to “work” a make up look without blusher in the past. It’s always ended in disaster.

So you can imagine my relief to see that Dorothy’s healthy glow is back in vogue. It’s subtle, mind, with only the lightest touch of blush on the cheeks.

This season I’ll be picking from Illamasqua’s Cream Blusher in Sob (£16.50), Nars blusher in Orgasm (£20.50), Sisley’s Phyto Blush Eclat in Pinky Rose (£46) and Estee Lauder Signature Blush in Rose Nuance (£24).
