The Pot Still

154 Hope Street

Glasgow

What is it? The building housing the famous Pot Still was built around 1835 and has always had links to the wine and spirit industry – it served as a wine merchants first of all and then became a public house in 1870. The Pot Still is renowned around the world for its range of more than 400 whiskies and its Glaswegian "charm". The decor is what you would expect from a pub steeped in history but it is authentic and retains its original features without being shabby.

Interesting fact In 1898 the premises where left to the second of a long list of the McCall family who were to run the business until 1981. The family appeared to have been superb raconteurs, with stories of incidents which happened in the pub passed down from one generation to the next. Customers over the decades have heard the tales of Tam the coalman who, at the turn of the century, parked his horse and cart outside the pub every day after work. Tam apparently did this for almost 60 years, long after he stopped working and lived to the ripe old age of 83.

Verdict This bar is now run by the father and son team of Brian and Frank Murphy who have done a great job of returning The Pot Still to its rightful position as one of the world's best whisky pubs. With regular tasting nights, great ales and live entertainment it's what a traditional pub should be like. Don't let the regulars fool you that this is only a whisky lovers bar, if you have even a trickle of interest in our national spirit the well-trained staff will take you on a voyage of discovery of some of the bar's 400 whiskies.

Signature drink I went for a Highland Park 18-year-old single malt, which won a recent world's best spirit contest. Now I know why. Reasonable, for what it was, at £5.50.

Food A basic menu is served all day and night. I had a classic steak pie and beans which was priced at £1.80 and was of a good pub standard.

Price Very reasonable. Pint of lager £3.30 and whiskies from £1.80 to £26.80 for nip.

Children No kids allowed.

Toilets Clean and what you would expect in a classic pub.

Alfresco No outside area so just out the front if you need a sneaky ciggie.

Avoid if You'd be more at home with a Bacardi and coke.

Perfect for Perching yourself at the bar and letting the knowledgeable staff do their thing.
